ALL-TIME BEST MIAC RECRUIT

Postby caveman12 on Sun Apr 04, 2010 8:06 pm

This make this into 2 categories.

1. Who is the best coming in (pre-college performances).

2. Who is the best considering their college performances.

My vote....NOT wonderboy.

Discuss.

This make this into 2 categories? Please read the title of the thread. It is the ALL-TIME BEST MIAC RECRUIT". Your NO vote is off topic as you should be voting for the best. If you'd like to re-vote, my suggestion is that my name shouldn't come up, based on your NO vote, which is based merely on your personal obsession with me. This make this clear coach. I will be abstaining as it would be a conflict of interest.

Here's my top 5 recruits.

1. Bob Hauck STO
2. Kevin Casson STO
3. Tim Olson STO
4. TIm Niznik STO
5. Scott Hagameyer GAC

As for top 5 all-time, I'll take a shot.

1. Bob Hauck STO
2. Kevin Casson STO
3. Nelson Westby STO
4. Gregory Sampson CAR
5. Tim Niznik STO

Had no idea Niznik was a 2 time national champ.

Top 5 Recruits:

1. Hauck STO
2. Casson STO
3. Olson STO
4. Underhill SJU (if rumors of a sub 21 50 pre-college are true)
5. Connelly STO

Top 5 All Time
1. Hauck STO
2. Westbii STO
3. Sampson Car (I don't know for sure if he was a transfer or not? He could very well be #2 up above as well. 5-time national champ).
4. Casson STO
5. Zelen SJU

Rumor correct. Based on the MIAC list that Mac posted, Underhill would be 1st in the 50 free, 1st in the 100 free, 2nd in the 100 fly, and 1st in the 100 back. Other events would be in the mix as well.

Forgot about Sampson. Did he ever win a race at nats? I think the cutoff for top 5 is winning at least one race at nats and qualifying for trials.

I also worked with Tim Olson and he is a total jerk-off. Confirmed by two Olaf 80's swimmers.

I noted Sampson was a 5-time National champ. Twice in the 100 breast (57.4), and 3 times in the 200 breast (2:03)... which is pretty good for late 89-91.

Updated my top 5. Sampson was better than I thought. Where did he come from, not MN. Maybe this is the USS swimmer that will make wonderboy's pt for him.

Sampson was not a transfer, since he was an All-American for Carleton in 1988. I also did a little digging through old issues of the Carletonian, one said he was a "two-time-all-Minnesota high school swimmer." But whatever his times were in 1987 (in--I'm guessing--the 100 breast and 200 IM, or maybe the 500), they aren't fast enough to still be on the list.

Max Harper isn't on the list either. That's a bonus to the Carleton coaches who developed that talent, further.

I'm not sure how accruate the list is. I thought Harper was sub-minute in high school (could be wrong though). Mac, or Chewy, or Sir Carl please call him to confirm.

I saw Ben Wareham STO and John Fox SMU both on the breast stroke list in the 59 range.

Either way, Sampson is in the discussion for #2 ever in the MIAC in my mind.

Westbii, Casson, Sampson

Strangely enough, that's not the same John Fox from Winona. The John Fox listed graduated in 1979 and was the first MN swimmer to break 1:00 in the 100 breast. He went to Kansas and swam D1. He was 4th at trials in the 100 breast. He was also my age group coach and pretty much the reason I got into swimming pretty hard. I actually dropped 35 seconds in the 100 free one year swimming for him when I was 8 or so. So big fan of him and his family. Not sure if John Fox of SMU is related or not.

I'll add Ben Wareham.

Ha, I'm not siding with either of you two, because you both sound incredibly stupid. I doubt caves has an obsession with you. There is one thing he can rely on, that is making one small jab at you, and then you making a huge rant about it. It is actually quite entertaining. It's also funny how you do research and bring up the history between both of you time and time again.

Hey wakeboarder, welcome to the site, I'm wonderboy. I see that you've been on here for years but prior to the last 24 hours, only posted twice. Considering the quote above, you have either been following the site for some time, did your own research on my posts, or have been told to check out the most recent back and forth between caveman and myself.

Feel free to take your shots at me as well. Next time, make it good, so that I can quote it as my signature. Personal threats would be acceptable. Dear God, don't make any spelling errors, I'll be all over that.

In either case, you well know that this site is about rants, and the MIAC Forum in particular, is no stranger to a battle or two. It spices things up a bit. I appreciate your contribution to the forum. Please pop in to provide your two cents again soon. Especially if you have an injury update from a close personal friend of a swimmer, or gossip about a D1 swimmer transferring to UST.

Correct. I believe he was a 57. My friend Paul Huynh (U swimmer) got 2nd that year, at like 58 or 59.
