Who is the best coach?

Postby Chapel Partner on Thu Apr 08, 2010 9:12 am

Which coach is the best?

-Wonderboy has countless examples of teenage girls almost breaking 5 minutes in the 500.
-Caveman has not posted any major accomplishments, but lets assume he's lighting things up.
-Chewy has trained former St. Olaf All American Brian Bachman to swim across the English channel... and trained some solid recruit going to Carleton.

Please feel free to add other candidates, or qualifications. I assume half the people who post on this site coach somewhere... not Mac and I of course. Why coach when you can make the medium bucks in the world of middle management?

I went with Caveman12. Great head of hair and you've just gotta respect a 4:42 HS 500 free.

Might also want to add Sundance to the list. He was Henrey Sibley's AC this year.

Another good topic, if you were to coach, would you rather do age group, high school, or college. I think I'd go HS.

Doesn't Wonderboy coach Cavemans swimmers the majority of the year so, really, Wonderboy should be given the credit. Wonderboy gets the vote easily. The high schools girls he has coached would beat Chapel.

can we nominate Upsidedownfly? his kid is 3 and can already whip kick nicely. plus he does coach some fast college and age group/club swimmers too. bascially, he does it all.

Correct. I shaved my head, and I swam the 500 once in HS as an extra event at USS State and only went 4:50, 10+ years prior. I believe Animal Mother coaches as well. Chapel, good thread. This topic has been decided before, but we certainly have more candidates now. Same schtick from both Chapel and Mac as well.

Oh, and I obviously enjoy the level I coach at but in terms of money, here is the list I would go with:
1. College
2. Age Group
3. High School

If you don't want to deal with crazy parents:
1. College
2. High School
3. Age Group

I'd disagree a little bit. Most head club coaches of respectable programs would make more than most college swimming coaches, if we're still talking D3. Also, D1 changes it completely because they can also be considered the head club coach, giving them even more money. Would you disagree? Perhaps you mean money per hour spent on deck, in which case you may be right since the college season is 6 months (unless you have kids at nats, then it's 6). College coaches probably have more time spent off deck with recruiting added in.

My older poll was much better. I miss Old & Rich.

I still think high school is the best. And besides, aren't most coaches just pressing play on the ghetto blaster and googling workouts?

College has better hours, plus you are not spending 20-30 12 hour days on the pool deck at some brutal club meets on Saturdays and Sundays. With recruiting, you also can help determine how good your team is. With club you can only coach the kids that find you, unless you're illegally recruiting from other teams, and it is a thankless job. However, club coaches are the best coaches out there by and large, and have the most impact on a swimmer's development as athletes and people, so it can be most rewarding. High school coaching is a joke, and you are a cut above your peers if you know the difference between yards and meters as you talk to the newspaper about your star swimmer and take credit for the work of their club coach.

We could add 15metermark to the list of swimmers who didn't get any better in college.

How has this been "decided"? Doesn't seem like wonderboy is very well liked.

In this case, I was literally referring to a coach that coaches 12 and unders when I referred to "Age Group". I should have assumed that Mac meant Club when referring to Age Group. Not sure why I missed that one. I agree with you that Club Coaches can make more money than College Coaches, especially at the D3 Level. It certainly depends on the level of college program you are in charge of, and how many swimmers you can squeeze in the pool at your club program. I'm not even sure what the top D1 college coaches make, do you have any idea? Probably a lot. I'm not sure how you can run both a D1 college program and a club program but I know it's done.

My guess is that with recruiting, college coaches spend about as much time on the job as club coaches. There's a lot of busy work coaching club, with scheduling, meet entries, coach enrichment for the assistants, etc. I'm sure there are similar duties with college, however, if you're in charge of 200+ swimmers at numerous practice locations, scheduling gets more difficult, as does the task of entering them all into meets, and making sure that your assistants are running the program that you have planned. Add in the number of e-mails and phone calls from parents, and the out of the pool requirements can be difficult to manage.
