Going to Nationals 2010/Bubble Watch

Postby weedwacker2000 on Sun Feb 28, 2010 10:03 pm

A somewhat belated congratulations to Westminster swimmers Caitlin Lehberger, Courtney Herdt and Ben Gutmann for their excellent efforts at the conference meet, which will allow them to continue their swim season in Minneapolis. I wish them, and their families (and coaches) well.

As it plays out two GCC women's relays are really on the bubble for an invitation. I thought the 200FR had a very good chance sitting in 10th spot (from last Weds. NCAA posting), but then the Williams relay got a better time at the NYU last chance, thus dropping Grove City to 11th.
As for the 800FR aggregate time of 7:41.15 - it also sits in 11th position according to the Weds. posting. However I believe Amherst can post a slightly faster aggregate, which if they do would then move Grove City to 12th for the 800FR.

The only GCC women's relay to go to Nationals was way back in 1993. Hope they make it this year.

I must be missing something - where did you see the Williams relay result?

Williams is listed as 1:45.59 in a 2 Free Relay although this makes no sense and it may have been a 2 Medley??
and 3:28.80 in the 4 Free relay.

Also I believe that Amherst has a 7:39.9 aggregate for the 800.

That result doesn't make sense on a few levels. Was Todhunter going for a 50 cut? If so, why didn't she swim the 50? If it's a medley the backstroke leg is ridiculous - there aren't many men going that fast. Also, the last three legs were all 27s - not exactly what you would expect from a free relay trying to make a cut, but not an apparent system malfunction where one split was obviously slow. The other thing - NYU lists all the pool records in the write up. They don't list the women's 200 Free Relay and the pool record is only a 1:42. If Williams had gone fast enough to be top 10 right now they would have had to be well under that. It's not like you can use Connecticut as a guide - their times might make less sense. Their leadoff looks like a 50 free leg, but the other three legs resemble a slow medley - 31high, 30low, 26 high.

Now that I look at it again - I see that Conn's lead off did the 50. Maybe Todhunter led off the 200 FR trying to help give Fernandes one more shot at the 50 and gave her a race. The other three legs just finished the swim to make it legal.
You have Pedro's protection. Vote for Pedro.

The Grove City women's 800 FR and 200 FR made it in sitting at 12th and 10th respectively. Congrats ladies!
